Things To Do In Savannah, Georgia on a Weekend Getaway
I love weekend getaways. Sometimes, you just need a quick break and to get the hell out of dodge. You know what I mean? Whether it’s making the most out of a short school holiday, or dropping kids off with grandma for a little romance. A weekend getaway has something for everyone to break up our regularly scheduled lives. There are so many things to do in Savannah, Georgia, that make it a perfect city for a weekend getaway. So let’s break it down

What Is A Weekend Getaway?
It may sound silly as the words “weekend getaway,” are pretty descriptive. But a weekend getaway is extending your weekend by one or two days for travel. My cousin over at Curated Leisure Co. calls it “micro-travel.” She’s also 25 and way more hip than me, so maybe that is what the kids are calling it these days. Regardless, it is taking a small vacation usually to a place that’s not too far from where you live. For example, those of us living in the U.S. normally wouldn’t jaunt over to Europe for a long weekend. Though I have seen it done, it makes my slow traveling self anxious to try to pack any European city in a weekend.
I normally limit my logistics for a weekend getaway to 6 hours. Which gives me a broad scope of North America and some places in the Caribbean since I live in Atlanta. It’s a good rule of thumb to ensure that you are not spending too much time in a plane or car. Usually, my weekend getaways are to cities on the East Coast or Midwest. But, just like Atlanta itself, I tend to overlook other cities in Georgia, thinking that they will always be there to explore. As such, I’ve never given Savannah the attention that it was due. Never staying in the city more than 24 hours and more often than not, bypassing it altogether on my way to St. Simons Island. But no more!
Where To Stay In Savannah
Most of the happenings in Savannah are in the downtown historic district, however staying in this area might be a little tough on the budget. As this is the main tourist drag, there are several upscale hotels and B&Bs. We ended up staying in the up and coming Starland district which is close to some of SCAD buildings. With a big student community, there are many places to eat and you are only a couple of miles from the downtown historic district.
Travel Tip: Catch an uber/lyft when staying away from the downtown historic district. Parking in Savannah is either expensive or battling it out for street parking. And there are different sweep zones to be mindful of. Using ride-sharing services removes all that hassle.
If you were trying to get in some beach time, then you might want to check out the area around Tybee Island. Or, if you wanted to be closer to nature, you could camp in Skidaway Island. But to explore the city itself, I would recommend the Starland district.
Things To Do in Savannah, Georgia
EAT!
Savannah is a city known for great food. So basically one of the best things to do is to fall back in love with carbs. Elevating your brunch game at The Fitzroy is one of the best places to start. French toast, avocado toast, or a life-changing open faced BLT? The choice is yours.
Another way to ensure that you are doing Savannah right? A lengthy dinner, particularly one at The Grey. After watching Chef’s Table on Netflix and being so inspired by Mashama and her story, I knew that eating at The Grey is an absolute must. It did not disappoint. Raw oysters, perfectly cooked quail, and to die for desserts will have you feeling as if the world is your oyster for the taking.
The last restaurant I recommend is Bull Street Taco, because well, life would be nothing without amazing tacos. I felt nothing but pure joy from the marigold margarita all the way to the artisan tacos. As an added bonus, this little gem is in the Starland district and so, if you’re lucky, you’ll be in walking distance.
WALK!
One of the best activities in Savannah, is walking around Forsyth Park and the beautiful historic squares. Further, Savannah is known for being “the most haunted city in the U.S.” Even though, I think New Orleans may have something to say about this title, walking ghost tours are a very popular activity. Actually all kinds of ghost tours are available in Savannah! Ghost tours on a bike, or even a pub crawl and ghost tour! I didn’t do a ghost tour this time around, but have done them in the past and they are super fun.
If you’re not into the supernatural, Savannah has tons of other delights. From group bike tours, shopping, and nightlife there is a little something for everyone. Of course, if you’re like me, you venture back to the food, and the walking is really just to help you get to your next meal :).
So that’s it! Short and sweet. Consider the beautiful Savannah, Georgia in your next weekend getaway plans.
