And How I Have Never Had a Bad Experience With Airbnb
Nope, this is not a sponsored post or an ad, I just really love Airbnb. What’s not to love? They are budget friendly, in great locations, and the hosts can make your travel experience exceptional. I recommend it to all my fellow travelers, but frequently run into hesitation. I think there are two main reasons people are skeptical about Airbnb. Either people find booking and staying in another person’s home strange. Or they have already had (or read about) a bad experience, and aren’t willing to risk it again. Even though there are some real horror stories out there, I want to dispel some of that skepticism by sharing my experiences.
The Budget Friendly Option
As an accountant it would be a crime not to mention how Airbnb is budget friendly first. In my experience, it is usually more affordable than hotels. This is especially true if you travel with children, like I do. Entire apartments or houses can be booked, giving everyone their own space. Abundant space is not something normally found in the typical hotel room, and multiple rooms or extra large rooms tend to really stretch the budget. However, where I really save money is in the kitchen. Being able to cook some meals, has literally saved me thousands of dollars, without taking away from from the vacation experience. If I come under budget for a vacation, it’s almost always due to utilizing Airbnb. Not to mention, as a parent, being able to give children their own space and cooking a couple of their favorite meals is priceless.
How Hosts Can Give You “Out of the Box” Experiences
Good hosts are the bread and butter of Airbnb. They even have a way to identify hosts that are so good, they are deemed “super host.” The second Airbnb I ever rented was in Edinburgh, Scotland. We arrived a little early, but the host had no problems letting us in. Then, as we were settling the host went to the grocery store and got us essentials like milk, eggs, and bread. We were so grateful to not have to worry about trying to go to the grocery store as soon as we arrived. He then proceeded to walk us around the Royal Mile and help us navigate. He was incredible. Grant, if you’re reading this, I will never forget your hospitality. Over the years I have met a ton of great hosts. I have also never forgotten to be a great guest!
How I Book My Airbnb’s
Start With Your Filters
I always book a whole property. This means that I don’t share the property with others outside my travel group. Booking an entire property helps you guarantee that your personal experience will not be ruined by some other obnoxious house guest. I think this is the most important option to check, but there are several amenities that you can check if they are important to you. L
Look at the Pictures
This is pretty normal, and probably the first thing everyone does when looking at any accommodation option. With Airbnb, it’s especially important as the pictures of a property can tell you a different story. I never book a property with 10 pictures or less. My theory is that if a host is proud of their property, and wants it to sell, they will take lots of pictures of it. Pictures can also show you the general layout of the property, and if there are obstacles, such as stairs, for people who have an immobility. The map location is also important. It can give you clues as to certain activity distances. After all, you wouldn’t want to stay to far from the beach if you are on a beach trip. The map of the general location will also help you determine factors such as, public transit availability and neighborhood safety.
READ THE REVIEWS
Yes I put this in all caps. It is that important. Reviews are how Airbnb can run efficiently. Other travelers telling future travelers about their experiences. Reviews give me a general impression of how other travelers enjoyed their stay. Prized words such as, “pictures do not do it justice,” or “incredibly clean” are key to look for. “Wish we could have stayed longer,” is also another treasured phrase I look for. I try to read at least 15 detailed reviews before booking a property. The “super host” symbol largely helps with this. A super host is a host who has received so many good reviews, that they get a special designation. The only time I ever book a property that doesn’t have at least 15 reviews, is if the host is a super host.
These days, for me to stay in a hotel, the hotel either has to be very special or significantly cheaper. I booked my first Airbnb in 2014, and I’m not looking back!
